A woman and a child were robbed by heavily armed men before a good Samaritan fired shots at the robbers.

Wierdabrug police are searching for a group of men who were involved in an attempted hijacking on Friday afternoon at the Centurion Lifestyle Centre.

A woman and a child were robbed by heavily armed men before a good Samaritan fired shots at the robbers.

Police spokesperson Captain Agnes Huma said the woman’s handbag was stolen during the incident.

“A case of armed robbery was opened for investigation. No one was injured and we are yet to make arrests,” she said.

A shopper, who wishes to stay anonymous for security reasons, said he fired shots at the attackers during the ordeal.

“I was inside a store when I heard screams outside. I noticed that a group of men were trying to rob a woman and a child in a Porsche. I decided to run outside. However, one of the suspects, who had an R5 in his hand, saw me and fired three shots at me.

“I retaliated and fired six at him and one shot hit him in the leg.”

The man said the robbers then fled in a white Ford.

“While they were driving away, they fired several shots while I took cover behind the counter.”

The centre confirmed the incident.

“We are cooperating with the police, who are on site. The safety and security of our customers, tenants and employees are of the utmost importance to us. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the security at the mall and the SAPS for their quick response.”
